Shirley Benn, Bolo Tie, Bengal Tiger, Shell, Jet, Turquoise, Handmade, 42"
Artist Shirley Benn was the daughter of Daisy Hooee. Daisy Hooee is the granddaughter of the famous Hopi potter Nampeyo and Daisy was also married to Zuni artist Leo Poblano. Shirley told me that her people are the Tewa who came to Hopi for protection. So, I never know if I should refer to her as Hopi, Tewa or Zuni. You can definitely tell that her work comes from a line like Poblano. Leo Poblano is considered one of the all time Zuni greats and worked with Daisy on several pieces. The mother was the teacher and she had an incredible student. You are going to be blown away by the detail of this Bengal Tiger and the touch of artistry that includes a cluster of turquoise stones. When Virgil stopped helping Shirley she began signing just her name.
