Santo Domingo Turquoise Beads, Circa 1980s, Spiny Oyster Shell, Handmade, 26”
Santo Domingo Turquoise Beads, Circa 1980s, Spiny Oyster Shell, Handmade, 26”
When we get a pair of beads the first thing we do is take a look at the jacla. It will tell you a lot about the quality of the beads. This Santo Domingo necklace has two pair of jaclas and they are nice turquoise. They connect to the top by a silver bead and large chunk of Chinese turquoise. You will find the artist has combined reddish orange spiny oyster shell into the necklace that gives the piece amazing color. Each bead graduates and gets bigger as you make your way down the necklace. The necklace looks fabulous on and is one of those you decide to take a vacation to Santa Fe just to show it off. Side note, jacla is the Navajo world for earring and it was common for the bottom to also be worn as earrings.
