Kelsey Jimmie, Bolo Tie, Zuni Shalako, Tufa Cast, Navajo Handmade, 42"
Each December in Zuni, New Mexico they hold the Shalako dances. Preparations for the event begin very early in the year and six new houses are constructed to hold the ceremonial dances. Spectators come from around world to the Zuni Pueblo to witness the amazing event. Large Shalako figures enter the home around midnight and dance through the night. The Shalako is a large figure that is the height of two people and very impressive looking. Many Navajos are part of the crowds witnessing the religious ceremony. Navajo silversmith Kelsey Jimmie has been inspired by the Shalako and made this beautiful bolo tie to show his appreciation of the Zuni culture. He creates the cuff using tufa casting techniques.
